JAMESTOWN HISTORY
The first Jamestown congregation met in the open air until 1872, when services moved to Robert Hill’s saddlery shop in Ayr St.
The first building on the current Irvine St site was built as a school room in 1874 and was also used for church worship on Sundays.
By 1877, plans were made for the church building with the foundation stone laid in August 1877 by Mrs Richard Williams. The President of the Methodist Conference, Rev. Thomas Lloyd, opened the church in August 1878.
This Wesleyan Methodist Church and its people became part of the union of Methodists in 1900, joined with the Presbyterians in 1970 to form the Jamestown United Parish, and became part of the Uniting Church with the Presbyterians and the Congregational Church in 1977.
